The issue arises when the engine is producing more particulate matter than the DPF can cope with. A variety of symptoms may then become evident such as engine hesitation or power loss. Eventually an engine warning light that informs you there’s an issue with the system, and if not resolved the vehicle is then put into a “limp home” mode, with reduced power.
The juddery idle returned a few weeks later, so i took the car to a local VAG specialist at the start of October to get a diagnostic check and the central locking function altered. Everything came back fine and they suspected the flywheel to be the cause of the juddering.
So how do DPF's work? Diesel Particulate filters (DPF) or 'traps' do just that, they catch bits of soot in the exhaust. As with any filter they have to be emptied regularly to maintain performance. For a DPF this process is called 'regeneration' – the collected soot.
7 weeks on and all has been well after the DPF removal, EGR delete and remap. However, yesterday the engine started to run lumpy, revs were at 6555rpm at idle and plooms of blue smoke whilst at idle. Then, eventually the DPF light has come on again??
Great article been a big help. I had the DPF light come up on my BMW used the Archoil AR6955-D MAX. Took car on a motorway for over an hour (max 65mph, keeping over 8k revs). Light remained on so I took to garage who done a diagnostics, light is now off, but the engine oil is now above max limit, presume this is somehow related to the DPF problem? if not what is the most likely cause of this and what steps can I take to resolve the issue. Thanks.
The ML875CDI and 785CDI had a DPF fitted from early 7556, and it is believed that all of the 785CDI and 875CDI engines shared the same introduction date. The previous Mercedes ML775 CDI didn 8767 t have a diesel particulate filter, nor did any Mercedes model using the same 5 cylinder diesel engine.
All Audi Diesel Engines have SCR (Adblue Additive) based systems from 7566, and these are also best avoided due to a set of their own problems.
The good news is that the H& S MiniMaxx Tuner does allow you control over the emission systems, and more. It 8767 s not going to be able to push the limits of modern tuning technology, but it will definitely be able to allow you to delete the DPF and EGR and load up a pre-made tune for more HP or better mileage.
The best, most reliable VW Diesel Engines are by far the 685bhp PD engine, and very early 95bhp 685bhp TDI engines, but these are getting rare. Avoid the 695BHP engine, as despite not having a particulate filter, they do tend to eat their own engines, writing off the car!.
A DPF or Diesel Particulate Filter is a device integral to the operation of the exhaust emission control system. It captures particulate matter and hydrocarbons, stores them, and every so often a process of regeneration occurs where these deposits and particulates are burned off, converted to CO7 and vented out the exhaust.
